'HIDDEN TIGER'
‘Hidden Tiger’ is a limited edition print by Artist Chris Chun which highlights the tiger, listed as ‘endangered’ by the IUCN. There are believed to be only around 3900 living wild, representing a 95% reduction from a century ago, where over 100,000 of tigers roamed across Asia. Poaching, habitat destruction and human-wildlife conflict are the main threats to the survival of the ‘king of the jungle’.
“I chose to draw the tiger not only to raise awareness for this big cat but also to symbolise the status of all endangered animals which are threatened such as the Asian Elephant, Javanese Rhino and Sumatran Orangutan etc. More than 27,000 species worldwide are threatened with extinction. The tiger is a critical part of ecosystems and cultures. If our forests are emptied, all that will remain of these animals will be distant legends and visits to the zoo”.
100% of all profits from this limited edition print will be donated to ARIEL for their work on animal law and wildlife protection. The proceeds will be used for three projects:
1. The drafting and promotion of an ASEAN Declaration of the Rights of Animals
Currently there exists no ASEAN legal instrument that recognises the rights of animals or the need for animal welfare, animal protection and protection of their habitats. Through this drafting process ARIEL hopes to raise the issue of animal welfare and animal rights, terrestrial and marine and wild, captive and domestic, and promote measures to protect animals and their habitats.
2. The awarding of an ARIEL Animal Law Fellowship for 2021
The ARIEL Animal Law Fellowship is to support an animal law scholar to promote the study of Animal Law as a legal subject in Asian Universities. The Fellowship will be awarded to fund the preparation of a paper for publication and to cover attendance at the Second ASEAN Animal Law Conference.
3. The Second ASEAN Animal Law Conference to be held in Thailand at the end of 2021
Our work on animal protection is vital for ASEAN. ARIEL has also signed up to support the Global Initiative to End Wildlife Crime.
